Food Friends Jenny and Mandy popped into Esher one lunchtime to sample The Giggling Squid’s delicious Thai menu. Part of a chain, The Giggling Squid retains its originality and feels like an independent restaurant.
Although The Giggling Squid in Esher is one of a chain of Thai restaurants, it feels like an independent because of touches such as the rough-hewn wooden walls and shelving at the back of the restaurant filled with books for patrons to peruse whilst eating. Adding to the ambiance of The Giggling Squid are the very different types of lighting dotted around the restaurant. Above the front windows are pendant lights with rich orange shades, while at the back of the restaurant some pretty ornamental lights drape like the blossoms of climbing plants, giving a gentle glow. The ceiling at the centre of the restaurant is dominated by huge, absolutely stunning, Thai lanterns with multiple lights grouped inside them. The overall effect is very attractive.
The Giggling Squid is deceptively large inside, with generously-spaced wooden tables and chairs, giving an airy feel. The atmosphere is calming – this is exactly the place to unwind while eating a delicious meal. We were undisturbed by the other diners until a guitarist serenaded the birthday girl at another table with ‘Happy Birthday’ and her friends joined the staff singing to her – a lovely touch.
The restaurant menu has a good selection:
Tapas sets (£10.95-£13.95): Perfect for trying out different types of Thai food.
One big dish (£9.50-£10.50)
Two dish meal combi (£10.50 for chicken dish; £11:50 for prawns and £9.50 for vegetable dish).
Desserts are available from £5.95 and include Jasmine and toasted rice; Pineapple, coconut and Mekhong sorbet; and ice creams.
The waiting staff were quietly friendly and efficient – our food and drinks arrived far quicker than we expected and we really didn’t need the substantial and delicious prawn crackers we’d ordered to keep our rumbling tummies at bay – but we ate them!
We both ordered the 2-dish meal combi of spring rolls or chicken wings alongside Red Thai curry with prawns and sticky rice – for an extremely reasonable price of £11.50.
The spring rolls were well-filled, light and crispy, complementing the Thai curry. The chicken wings were fabulously juicy – the flavours were mouth-watering and the meat fell off the bone.
Our Thai curry and sticky rice were beautifully presented, the curry in a small bowl with the rice alongside it. It was exactly the right consistency and the prawns were beautifully juicy. It tasted superb – there was a kick to it without being too tongue-burningly spicy.
We finished up with Americano coffees – a mellow blend which hit the spot
perfectly after such a delicious meal! This is definitely a restaurant we would recommend to others and we both intend to return in the not-too-distant future!
