Each year the Mothers’ Union hold a National Meeting for all the UK members in a different place. This year it was Portsmouth’s turn.
About 1,000 members gathered in the Guildhall for the meeting. A Eucharist Service was held in Portsmouth Cathedral the day before the National Meeting and so many members wished to attend that two services had to be held, one in the afternoon and one in the early evening. A few members from our Branch were able to attend.
The Annual Meeting was special this year as it was attended by the newly elected World Wide President, Sheran Harper. Sheran is the first World Wide President to live outside the UK. Her home is in Guyana. It is most appropriate that the MU – which started in the parish of Old Alresford nearly 150 years ago, and now has a worldwide Membership of nearly four million members in 84 countries throughout the world – should have a World Wide President which reflects this great diversity.
Nearer to home, each year our Branch makes up a small carrier bag of toiletries, scarves, socks and other useful necessities, together with a few festive sweets and treats, for the Women in the four Refuges from Domestic violence.
At our October meeting we all gathered to pack these small carriers of Christmas goodies. In order to fund these bags the MU Members and Members of St. Christopher’s Congregation raised almost £300 towards these endeavours, for which we are most grateful.
